Pre/Post BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers Treatment Instructions
Pre/Post BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers Treatment Instructions

Botox and dermal filler are two of our most popular cosmetic treatments at Spa43. Both can help you achieve a refreshed, more youthful look. Best of all, they’re minimally invasive. However, they still require preparation and aftercare. Following the right treatment instructions will give you the best results and ensure an easy recovery process.

What to know before and after BOTOX®

Taking care of yourself before and after BOTOX® isn’t complicated, but it is important to getting the results you want and reducing discomfort and swelling.

Who shouldn’t get BOTOX?

BOTOX is generally safe and approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), but there are some people who should avoid it unless otherwise approved by their doctor. Avoid BOTOX if you are or have:

  • Myasthenia Gravis
  • Allergy to botulinum toxin
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Allergy to human albumin

How should I prepare for BOTOX?

To avoid unnecessary side effects like bruising and ensure a smooth appointment:

  • Eat something. Avoid arriving on an empty stomach to reduce the chance of lightheadedness.
  • Let your doctor know if you have a history of Herpes Simplex (cold sores). Notify your provider at least one week in advance. This allows enough time for them to prescribe medication to prevent a breakout.
  • Notify your doctor of any medications and supplements you take. Your provider should have a full list of your medications as well your medical history to make sure there’s no negative interactions.
  • You may take Tylenol. Acetaminophen is a safe pain reliever if you’re worried about discomfort.

What should I avoid before BOTOX?

Avoid certain substances and activities before your appointment to minimize bruising and swelling, including:

  • Aspirin and NSAIDs. Medications like Advil, Aleve, and Ibuprofen should be stopped 7–10 days before treatment.
  • Alcohol. Skip alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment to reduce the risk of bruising.
  • Sun exposure. Avoid tanning or sunburns before treatment.
  • Hair removal. Avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or using depilatory creams near the treatment area.

What should I do after BOTOX?

Aftercare can make a big difference in how well your Botox works. Follow these guidelines for best results:

  • Use the treated muscles. Frown, smile, or squint for 1–2 hours after to help the Botox settle in.
  • Apply makeup. If you want, you can put on makeup immediately after treatment.
  • Give it time. You may notice a difference in 4–5 days, but Botox typically takes up to 14 days for full effect.

What should I not do after BOTOX?

Certain activities or substances can interfere with your results or cause the product to spread:

  • Don’t touch the area. Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for 2–4 hours.
  • Don’t lie down or lean forward. Stay upright for at least 2 hours after your injections.
  • Avoid sweating and exercise. No strenuous activity for at least 24 hours.
  • No facials or massages. Skip any facial treatments or massages for 2 weeks.
  • Continue to avoid NSAIDs. Don't take Ibuprofen, Advil, or Motrin post-treatment; Tylenol is fine as needed.

What to know before and after dermal fillers

Following these simple guidelines before and after receiving dermal filler will give you the best experience possible—and importantly, the best results.

Who shouldn't get dermal fillers?

Like Botox, fillers are generally safe, but they aren’t suitable for everyone. Unless otherwise approved by your doctor, avoid fillers if you are or have:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Active skin infections
  • Known allergies to ingredients

How should I prepare for dermal fillers?

Proper preparation helps ensure the best outcomes and most comfortable treatment process:

  • Eat something. This helps avoid dizziness during or after treatment.
Acetaminophen can be used to manage mild discomfort or anxiety.

What should I avoid before dermal fillers?

Steer clear of certain medications and activities in the days and weeks leading up to your appointment:

  • Aspirin and NSAIDs. Avoid these 7–10 days prior to minimize bruising.
  • Dental work. Skip cleanings or procedures for 2 weeks before and after filler.
  • Blood thinners. Medications like Coumadin or Plavix may need to be paused. Always consult your prescribing doctor first.
  • No makeup or skincare products. Arrive to your appointment with a clean, bare face—no creams, lotions, or cosmetics.

What should I do after dermal fillers?

Aftercare is essential to reducing swelling and achieving natural-looking results:

  • Use a cold compress. Apply gently to minimize swelling and discomfort.
  • Take Tylenol if needed. It’s a safe pain-reliever to help manage any soreness.
  • Apply makeup later. You can wear makeup a few hours post-treatment, once any pinpoint bleeding or open areas have closed.

What should I not do after dermal fillers?

Avoid the following to allow the filler to settle properly and minimize side effects:

  • No exercise. Avoid physical activity for at least 24 hours.
  • Avoid UV exposure. Keep out of direct sunlight and tanning beds.
  • Limit alcohol. Alcohol can worsen swelling and bruising, so avoid it for a day or two.
  • Don’t touch or massage the area. Let the filler settle without interference unless instructed otherwise by your provider.
