Our medical providers do everything possible to minimize discomfort during your microneedling treatment. You will be prescribed a topical anesthetic to apply to the treatment area which will significantly reduce any pain you may experience, making the treatment quite comfortable. Bony areas on the face tend to be more tender than others and treatment around the nose can cause a tickling sensation.
Microneedling has minimal downtime. You may experience temporary redness, sensitivity, slight swelling, or minimal pinpoint bleeding or bruising. Redness typically subsides within 12–48 hours, while sensitivity may persist a bit longer.
Microneedling is suitable for nearly all skin types, making it a versatile treatment option. However, if you have used Accutane within the last six months, microneedling may not be appropriate for you. To determine the best treatment plan, it’s important to discuss your medical history and any concerns with a qualified provider.
After microneedling, your skin will be red , have pinpoint bleeding, and may feel like a fresh sun burn. For the first 2-3 days, you’ll want to treat your face like an open wound. This includes cleaning your glasses, cellphone screens, or anything else that may come into direct contact with your face, avoiding picking or exfoliating, and avoiding makeup for at least 24 hours. For full aftercare instructions, see here.
Avoid sun exposure, the use of a tanning bed, and self-tanning products for at least 24 hours before and after microneedling. You should also avoid medications like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, or Aleve for one week before to minimize the potential for bruising. Stop using retinol, topical antibiotics, exfoliants, hydroquinone, and benzoyl peroxide products for 48 hours before treatment. For full pre- and post-treatment instructions, see here.
Yes, you should stop using retinols 48 hours before microneedling.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) promotes collagen and elastin production in deeper skin levels than microneedling alone. So, microneedling with PRP can enhance treatment results, improving the appearance of acne scars, wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, large pores, or uneven skin texture.
Just like microneedling without PRP, you’ll want to treat your skin like an open wound for the first 2-3 days. Apply your refrigerated PRP serum once an hour for the first four hours after treatment. You’ll continue to apply the PRP serum each day until your skin is fully healed (5-7 days). See full aftercare instructions for microneedling with PRP here.
